Sports Massage in Abu Dhabi: What It Actually Does and Who Should Book It

You finish a leg day, feel great on the drive home, and then wake up the next morning unable to sit down without wincing. Sound familiar?

Most of us put up with that kind of soreness because we think it’s part of the deal. Sometimes it is. But there’s a point where tight muscles stop being a sign of a good workout and start getting in the way of the next one. That’s usually when people look into sports massage.

So, what is a sports massage?

It’s a massage that focuses on the muscles you actually use and overwork. Where a relaxing massage is about slowing down and switching off, a sports massage is more targeted. The therapist spends time on the areas that feel tight, sore or restricted, like your hamstrings after a run, your shoulders after a week at a desk, or your lower back after lifting.

The pressure is usually firmer, and the techniques are more specific. If you’ve ever had a knot in your shoulder that no amount of stretching could fix, you already know why this kind of work exists.

If you want a closer look at how it works, we’ve covered the basics in our guide to sports massage and its techniques.

You don’t have to be an athlete

This is the part people get wrong. The name makes it sound like it’s only for marathon runners or professional players, but it isn’t.

It’s just as useful if you:

  • go to the gym three or four times a week
  • play padel, tennis or football with friends
  • run, cycle or swim for fun
  • sit at a desk all day and end up with a stiff neck and tight hips
  • have started a new fitness routine and your body is still catching up

Basically, if your muscles are working harder than they’re used to, or not moving enough, a sports massage can help.

What you can expect to feel

Honestly, it depends on where you’re at. Some people notice that their soreness eases up within a day or two. Others say their body just feels looser and moves more easily, especially around the hips, shoulders and back.

Regular sessions also help your therapist spot problem areas early. A muscle that’s always tighter on one side, for example, can be a sign of an imbalance that’s worth looking after before it turns into something bigger.

Is it painful? It can be firm, and a tight spot might feel tender when the therapist works on it. But it shouldn’t be unbearable. Tell your therapist if the pressure is too much and they’ll adjust. A good session is the kind of uncomfortable that feels like something is releasing, not the kind where you’re gripping the table.

How often should you go?

There’s no single right answer, but here’s a rough guide:

  • Training hard or heading into a competition? Weekly sessions can make sense.
  • Exercising regularly for fitness? Every two to four weeks is a common rhythm.
  • Just dealing with desk stiffness? Once a month is often enough to keep things from building up.

Your body will tell you. If you notice that tightness is creeping back sooner than before, book a little earlier next time.

Sports massage or deep tissue massage?

People ask us this a lot, and the two do overlap. Both use firm pressure and both work on deeper layers of muscle.

The difference is mostly in the goal. Sports massage is built around movement, recovery and how your body handles exercise. Deep tissue massage is better suited to long-standing tension and chronic tightness that has been sitting in your muscles for a while. If you’re not sure which one fits, tell us what you’re dealing with and we’ll point you in the right direction.

Pairing it with other treatments

Some clients like to build a bit of a recovery routine around their sessions. A few combinations that work well:

  • After a heavy training block: follow a sports massage with a relaxing massage a couple of weeks later to let your body properly unwind.
  • For stubborn tightness: dry cupping therapy is something a lot of active people try alongside their massages.
  • If you’re feeling puffy or heavy after a tough week: a post lymphatic massage is a gentler option that many people enjoy.

What it costs at Sara Beauty

Here’s how our sports massage sessions are priced:

  • 60 minutes: AED 180
  • 90 minutes: AED 249
  • Package of 10 sessions (90 minutes each): AED 2,299

If you already know you’ll be coming back regularly, the package works out better than paying per visit. Take a look at our packages for the full list.

All sessions are with female therapists in a private, women-focused setting, so you can relax without having to think about it.

A few things before you book

  • Eat something light a couple of hours before, not right before.
  • Drink water afterwards. It’s a simple habit, but it makes you feel better.
  • Let your therapist know about any injuries, recent surgeries or areas that hurt. It helps them work around them properly.
  • Don’t plan a hard workout straight after. Give your body the rest of the day.

If you’re pregnant, our prenatal massage is designed for you, so please mention it when you book.

Ready to try one?

If your muscles have been complaining for a while, you don’t need to wait until something properly hurts. Have a look at our sports massage page for details, or get in touch with us and we’ll help you pick the right session length. You can also book directly here.
